New Year's gift basket 2011: Bangkok's public spending totals 1.1 billion baht
The Taihua Farmers Research Center conducted a survey between December 1st and 10th, targeting 528 consumers aged 15 to 65 in Bangkok, focusing on the theme of "Bangkok Citizens Purchase New Year Gift Baskets." The results revealed that 57.8% of respondents plan to buy at least one New Year gift basket this year, marking an increase compared to previous years. As has been the case in past seasons, the majority of buyers intend to purchase these baskets for family members, particularly their parents. Notably, 90% of those surveyed reported either maintaining or slightly increasing their gift basket budgets from previous years.
Additionally, both the number of gift baskets purchased per person and the average price of each basket have risen. On average, individuals are expected to buy 3.66 gift baskets this year, up from 3.39 last year. Moreover, the percentage of respondents planning to spend over 500 baht on a single gift basket has also increased. Based on these trends, the Taihua Farmers Research Center predicts that total spending on New Year gift baskets by Bangkok residents will reach 1.1 billion baht by the end of the year—a 12.7% rise compared to the previous year.
In addition to these purchasing trends, the survey highlighted changes in product content due to government regulations. Specifically, the 2009 Alcoholic Drinks Management Act prohibits the inclusion of alcoholic beverages in New Year gift baskets. As a result, retailers have adapted by offering more health-focused and eco-friendly options. This shift aligns with consumer preferences, as the survey found that Bangkok residents are showing greater interest in health-oriented gift baskets this year. These include baskets filled with bird's nest, chicken essence, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Meanwhile, the presence of alcoholic products in gift baskets has significantly declined.
