After the Year of the Rabbit, a major stamp auction is set to take place in Hong Kong. The Interasia Auctions will be held from February 26th to 28th in the spring of 2011. Among the many highlights, two Gold Award collections have drawn significant attention.
I recall that during the 2010 Spring Auction of Interasia, a set of "Full Victory" Quartet stamps with factory Ming price sold for HK$6.77 million, setting a new record in Chinese stamp auctions. This year’s event features a particularly rare item: an unpublished stamp featuring Mao Zedong's inscription for Japanese workers in 1968, known as the "Black Inscription." This four-stamp collection is vibrant and beautifully designed, with the central image on the right and lower part of the sheet. It is estimated to sell between HK$6 million and HK$8 million. This piece will serve as the cover of the auction catalog and will be part of the renowned Singapore Postmaster Ng Siong Tee’s stamp collection.
At the 1999 China World Stamp Exhibition, both Chinese collector Li Dianwen and Singaporean philatelist Huang Shangzhi received gold awards for their traditional collections of the “Chinese Writings†stamps. Huang’s collection in this auction offers a rare opportunity for collectors to admire these exceptional pieces. Alongside the "Black Inscription," there are also "Red" and "Full Victory" versions of the "Jane Post" series. Another notable Gold Award collection this time is the "Zhongshan CITIC Sun Yat-Sen-like Stamp" set, which won the gold medal at the Asian Exhibition.
The auction also includes a comprehensive catalog, where the red-printed round-stamped stamps stand out. Compared to other red stamps, these have been less recognized. The "When Wu Yuan" stamps were primarily used for Huiyin Execution, but after redemption, they were collected and destroyed by the Beijing General Post Office. Most surviving "When Wu Yuan" stamps are in new condition, issued by the Bank of Communications. They have a post-coated adhesive. Some of these stamps were used on foreign letters sent overseas, along with official mail and reversal tickets. This shows that the "Dian Wu Yuan" stamps were not only used for internal purposes but also as postage. The red stamp in this auction is estimated to sell between HK$4.8 million and HK$5.5 million.
Another highlight from Qing Dynasty philately is the third postage-stamped postcard of Daqing Post, postmarked by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Industry in 1908. Only a dozen or so examples are known to exist, making it one of the most valuable postal history items from the Qing era. Additionally, one of the "China Post Four Po" stamps will be offered for sale, with an estimated value of HK$0.9 million to HK$1.2 million. New China stamp products, such as the "Geng Shen Nian" full-length stamps, are expected to significantly influence current market trends.
