The price of cotton rose by the merchants “Run to earn money†Price of clothing has not risen
In the current climate of rising cotton prices, rumors about a potential increase in autumn and winter clothing have been circulating. However, upon visiting several shopping malls in the provincial capital, the reporter found that most businesses are absorbing the cost increases rather than passing them on to consumers. As a result, clothing prices have remained relatively stable.
In the clothing market, autumn collections are already on display, with some winter items also available for purchase. The reporter estimated that shirts made from cotton range between 100 to 300 yuan, while lightweight cotton garments fall between 150 to 800 yuan. From what was observed, there hasn’t been a noticeable price hike in most autumn and winter wear.
Branded clothing has also seen little change in pricing. At Ginza Mall’s Texwood counter, a salesperson confirmed that the new shirt is priced at 559 yuan, the same as last year. Similarly, staff at Jiangnan Commoner mentioned that autumn and winter clothes haven’t experienced significant price increases compared to the previous season.
Underwear and home wear prices have remained stable as well. In a store on Chaoshan Street, a salesperson noted that although some underwear prices have gone up, the cotton sets have not changed in price.
Consumer feedback supports these findings. Qiao Cong, a junior at Shandong University of Economics, said he noticed that clothing prices this season are almost the same as in previous years. Additionally, during a random survey of 10 consumers at Ginza Shopping Plaza, six of them stated that clothing prices have not increased significantly.
According to data from Shandong Textile Net, the price of cotton has surged since the end of last year, reaching over 23,485 yuan per ton recently—up more than 20% from 1,802 yuan per ton in early September.
So why hasn’t the rise in raw material costs translated into higher clothing prices? A representative from the Shandong Textile Industry Association, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that most branded apparel manufacturers have long-term suppliers or even their own cotton spinning mills, which help them absorb part of the cost pressure. Additionally, there is a time lag between rising cotton prices and their impact on final retail prices.
Some businesses offered another perspective. Ms. Wang, owner of Aphrodite Fashion Women’s Clothing, said, “Costs are definitely up, but we can’t raise prices.†She added that in a highly competitive market, keeping prices low is essential to attract customers. “We’re running to earn money, even if it means making less profit.â€
At Cardin Road on the second floor of Dakou Clothing Market, men’s clothing was being sold at a 30% discount. The store manager told the reporter, “Prices haven’t gone up.†To stay competitive and avoid losses, many stores have only raised new apparel prices by 10–20 yuan.
It's worth noting that children's clothing prices have increased by 5–15% this year, with cotton fabric prices rising as much as 20–25%. This indicates that the cost pressures from upstream suppliers are gradually being passed down to consumers.
