When we last heard from Flat S, she had just wrapped up her festive season in New Zealand. We suspected that after traveling all over the globe, she might have started missing home a bit, particularly America. So, she embarked on a journey back to her roots. Flat S made a quick pitstop in Houston to catch up with Soraia and her family. Below is a note from Soraia, sharing her experiences with Flat S during her visit. For more details about Soraia's life, check out her blog, Sew Happy. Flat S arrived in Texas just after the Houston Rodeo—a significant event in the city. But don't let the cowboy vibe fool you; Houston is bustling with activity beyond just rodeos! Besides being famous for its rodeo, Houston is also known as a hub for the oil and gas industry and boasts the largest medical center globally. As a result, Houston has transformed into a highly cosmopolitan city, attracting people from every corner of the world. On her first trip to Texas, Flat S didn’t encounter any true-blue Texans—instead, she met a Portuguese family! The children were ecstatic about her arrival and quickly decided they would take her to their favorite spots around town. For our first outing, we headed downtown to the Theatre District. Adjacent to the Theatre District lies the Buffalo Bayou. At the Preston Street Bridge, there's a curious red button that triggers something fascinating—a bubble of compressed air that bursts through the tranquil waters of Buffalo Bayou. It’s quite the spectacle! Here you can see Teresa helping Flat S push the button. Still in downtown, we visited Sam Houston Park. In this park, several authentic historical structures have been preserved by the Heritage Society. These buildings represent various eras, from a pre-Texas Revolution cabin to an 1891 church constructed by German and Swiss immigrants and a mansion equipped with all the modern conveniences of 1905. These homes offer insight into how different segments of society lived daily—from newly freed slaves building new lives to affluent merchant families thriving. Here is Flat S and Teresa standing in front of the "Fourth Ward Cottage," dating back to 1858, with architectural influences reminiscent of Acadian Louisiana. Their favorite building, however, was the "Old Place"—a rustic cabin crafted from rough-sawn cedar planks around 1823. Next, we ventured into the Museum District, home to dozens of museums. Teresa’s favorite is the Museum of Fine Arts, while Manuel’s preference leans toward the Natural Science Museum, where you can marvel at all the dinosaur exhibits. After exploring the museums, we took Flat S to see the newly opened Centennial Gardens. The gardens were stunning, and both the kids and Flat S had a blast playing around. That day was scorching, so the kids decided to kick off their shoes and enjoy the fountains at Herman Park. Here you can spot Teresa and Flat S splashing around in the water! One of our favorite activities during spring and summer is watching ballet or opera performances at the Miller Outdoor Theater. We simply sit on the grass and enjoy the incredible shows put together by the Houston Ballet or the Houston Opera. They’re nothing short of spectacular! The kids adore it. Here’s Teresa and Flat S at the Miller Outdoor Theater during the day. Later in the evening, we attended a performance of Sleeping Beauty (photos weren’t allowed). And did I mention this event is free? Lastly, the kids insisted Flat S couldn’t leave without indulging in artisanal ice cream at our go-to spot: Amy’s Ice Cream. We truly enjoyed having Flat S with us. I hope she loved her time here and continues to have fun on her travels. I’m curious to know where she’ll end up next… (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
