Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to Tara, who's joining us on the blog for our latest installment of the "Favorite Pattern Series." In this series, we invite fans to share their thoughts on their beloved patterns. Tara is here to talk about hers. Hi everyone, I’m Tara Kellermann. I’m proud to say I’m the mom of four wonderful girls aged between 10 and 17. I’ve always loved sewing, but unfortunately, I don’t get to do it as often as I’d like. My own mom taught me how to sew when I was younger, and while I’ve tried to pass that passion onto my kids, none of them have really caught the bug yet. Still, all of them know how to handle a sewing machine and a needle and thread, which is a good start for their future endeavors. When it comes to Liesl + Co. patterns, my favorite tends to be the one I’ve just finished. Right now, it’s the Everyday Skirt. I made this for my eldest daughter using fabric she chose during our summer trip to southern Baja, California. We spent quite some time there, and although I didn’t have all my sewing supplies with me, I managed to pull it off using just the internet and the Oliver + S website to check the required fabric quantities. It’s such a handy feature when you’re shopping without having your patterns on hand. The Everyday Skirt pattern is incredibly user-friendly and doesn’t take long to complete. I worked on it mostly independently since my daughter wasn’t around for every step, and next time, I’ll make sure to adjust the length of the pattern pieces before cutting the fabric. After finishing everything but the hem, I trimmed off 4.5 inches, something I always think I can get away with but later regret. The skirt turned out slightly roomier than expected in the waist, leaving extra fabric in the back, so I’d consider sizing down next time. However, I absolutely adore the flat front waistband—it’s quite flattering. One lesson I’ve learned from Liesl and the lady who taught me smocking (which I haven’t tried on an Oliver + S pattern yet) is to pay attention to the details on the wrong side of the garment. For this skirt, I used orange quarter-inch bias tape to finish the inside seams, and I’m really pleased with how it looks and its durability in the wash. Another fantastic feature of this pattern is the pockets—my daughter immediately noticed them when she tried it on. Over the years, I’ve gained valuable experience from working with Liesl’s patterns and from books like *Little Things to Sew* and *The Building Block Dress*. These resources aren’t just about patterns but also about customizing them to suit your personal style. The Oliver + S pattern I cherish the most is the School Days Coat. I made it in a light tan herringbone wool with a salmon print voile lining and toggle buttons. My 12-year-old daughter wore it for three years, and then my youngest wore it for another two before it mysteriously disappeared. Since it only goes up to size 8, I’ve kept the pattern safely stored for future projects. Other Oliver + S patterns I’ve tried include the Apple Picking Dress, Classic Picnic Shorts, Badminton Skort, and Popover Sundress. I’m glad most of their patterns now go up to size 12. This is the first time I’ve made the Everyday Skirt, and I haven’t sewn any Oliver + S patterns more than once. To me, sewing is like cooking—I’m always eager to try something new. I definitely plan on making the Everyday Skirt again since it fits both me and two of my daughters. It’s versatile enough to be dressed up or down based on the fabric choice. Next time, I’d love to experiment with a contrasting pocket, similar to the ones by Karyn Valino. As always, thank you for reading! If you have any questions or comments about today’s post, feel free to reach out. Happy sewing!
