The Cotton Association of India stated in its October forecast that Indian cotton production in the current crop season is expected to increase by 16% to 35.7 million bales, compared with 30.8 million bales last year.

The trade organization did not give reasons for the increase in production.

In August, the state-run Indian Cotton Advisory Committee stated that India's cotton production is expected to increase by 10% to 32.5 million bales in the crop year that began on October 1, due to increased planting area and good rainfall during the monsoon season.

The association also stated that, including carryover stocks, the annual availability of cotton for this crop is estimated at 41.9 million bales (170 kg per bale). Domestic consumption is expected to be 26.6 million bales.

According to Dhiren Sheth, president of the association, as of October 31, the quantity of cotton arriving in the domestic market is expected to be 2.6 million bales, which is higher than the 2.5 million bales in the same period of last year.

India is the world’s second-largest cotton producer and exporter, allowing exports of 5.5 million bales in 2010-11.
