Thailand's garment and textile industry has shown steady growth. The Thai market has invested more energy in developing products with high added value, especially environmentally friendly products. These products account for about 10% of Thailand's textile and apparel exports. In 2010, Thailand’s exports of clothing and textiles reached US$3.21 billion, an increase of 8.27% compared with the same period last year. From the category of export products, the export value of clothing ranked first, up to 88 million US dollars; followed by non-woven fabrics and yarns, with an export value of 78.9 million US dollars; synthetic fibers and staple fibers In third place, the total export value was 23.6 million US dollars; in addition, the export value of household textiles reached US$11.6 million, and the export value of embroidery and mesh fabrics was US$4.6 million each.

The United States has always been the largest export market for Thai clothing. In 2010, Thailand’s exports to the United States reached US$1.26 billion, an increase of 7.26% compared with the same period last year. The EU (exports of US$1 billion) and Japan (exports of US$2.53 billion) were in second and third places. Compared with the same period last year, Thailand’s clothing exports to the two regions rose respectively. 4.69% and 11.73%. According to a report issued by Adsale Publishing Ltd., Thailand’s garment exports to the ASEAN region amounted to US$118 million, a year-on-year increase of 34.51%. At the same time, Thailand's apparel and textile market has high technical requirements for printing machinery, as well as related printing and graphic arts workshops. According to the news released by the Ministry of Commerce, the import value of printing machinery in the Thai garment and textile industry in 2010 was about 895 million US dollars, an increase of 29% compared with 2009. Thailand mainly imports the above printing machinery from Japan, followed by China, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ireland, the United States and Taiwan. At present, the labor gap in the Thai garment and textile industry is 30,000, and the gap will reach 100,000 in the future. According to data released by Fibre2FashionNewsDesk (India), only 450,000 of the 700,000 garment and textile industry employees are formally employed by apparel companies. This also means that the industry needs more workers who can work in local clothing and textile manufacturing companies for a long time.

In 2008, the Thai government allocated nearly $72.7 billion to the apparel and textile industry for the procurement of related machinery and technology. The Thailand Textile Association (THTI) said that Thailand still needs to spend $145.5 million to purchase high-end clothing and textile production technology to improve and upgrade the machinery and technology of the industry. Thailand will use its innovative technology to transform its role, from the original equipment manufacturer to the original design manufacturer, and eventually to the original brand producer within a few years. At present, the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) has been officially launched, and the ASEAN region has started a comprehensive tax reduction. Thailand began to focus on the large market of ASEAN. Mr. ViratTandaechanurat, Executive Director of the Thai Textile Association, said that the cost of raw materials in Thailand is low and that Thailand is close to ASEAN countries, and that companies can ship raw materials to Thailand at relatively low cost.

Dej Pattanasettapong, former chairman of the National Federation of Thai Textile Industry (NFTTI), said he believes Thailand will have a place in the world fashion scene in the next decade, because Thailand has great design, advanced manufacturing equipment, free brand strategy and Good sales channels. Especially for Thai design talents, they have the ability to design clothing based on fashion and seasonal needs. DejPattanasettapong also pointed out that in the past two years, the textile and clothing exports of the world's major garment producing countries (such as China, Eastern Europe, Mexico and Cambodia) have fallen sharply.
