Looking at Zhengzhou's "face" in the coastal Qizhou Henan garment industry ushered in business opportunities

The 2010 China (Zhengzhou) International Sewing Equipment and Surface Accessories Exhibition marked a significant milestone, launching in Zhengzhou with over 150 renowned domestic and international companies showcasing their latest innovations. From embroidery machines and laser cutters to bag-opening devices and sewing systems, the event turned Ruyi Lake into a vibrant hub for the Central Plains' booming apparel market. A clear consensus emerged: Henan’s apparel industry is unlocking massive business opportunities. For instance, a Japanese embroidery machine from Tajima Embroidery Machinery Co., Ltd. can complete an intricate design in just 75 minutes, operating at 850 needles per minute—something that would take days for a human artisan. At the exhibition, dozens of leading brands in the garment industry amazed attendees with cutting-edge technologies and advanced machinery. It wasn’t just about sewing equipment; surface accessory companies also unveiled new products and innovations, showing the breadth of development in the sector. Yan Shuilin, chairman of Suzhou Xiadan Knitted Fabrics Garment Co., Ltd., emphasized the importance of exhibitions for product exposure. He stated that the company selects at least three major events annually, and this year, Zhengzhou was his top choice. If conditions allow, he plans to establish an office in Henan. Similarly, Ms. Li, regional manager of Guangye Precision Machinery Co., Ltd., noted that the company's headquarters is highly optimistic about the growing potential in Henan and the central region. Many exhibitors were making their debut in Henan, but they all agreed: compared to the eastern regions, Henan and its surrounding areas represent a promising emerging market. Apparel companies in Henan are offering substantial opportunities for manufacturers and suppliers alike. Data shows that Zhengzhou has a sewing equipment market valued between 300 million and 400 million yuan annually. Sun Baozhong of Zhengbao Sun Machine Equipment Co., Ltd. pointed out that in the age of industrialized production, without advanced equipment, garment companies cannot compete. This sentiment aligns with local businesses. According to the Zhengzhou Garment Association, in 2004, the annual sales of sewing equipment in Zhengzhou were around 70 million yuan, but now the demand has surged to 300–400 million yuan. Brands like Jack, Gems, and Zhongjie have seen 100% sales growth in the Henan market in recent years. Chen Yongbin, chairman of Henan Lingxiu Apparel Co., Ltd., noted that while Henan may not be the largest market for sewing equipment, it is certainly the one with the fastest growth, averaging over 30% increase per year. This rapid expansion signals huge market potential. That’s why global giants like Standard, Zhongzui, Dukespu, Toyama, Eastman, Japan Heavy Machinery, and others have focused on the Henan market. They are actively seeking partnerships with local garment enterprises, eager to tap into the growing demand. As one industry leader put it, “Five years ago, such an exhibition wouldn’t have attracted so many international sewing equipment companies.” The rise of Zhengzhou’s clothing industry, especially in women’s trousers, has drawn attention from upstream and downstream players. Liu Wumin, general manager of Zhengzhou Dalu Exhibition Co., Ltd., mentioned that the event generated strong interest, drawing numerous exhibitors and visitors. Additionally, garment associations from eight provinces, including Anhui, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, and Hubei, sent representatives to participate. Last year, Fuyang in Henan became a pilot for the transfer of the coastal clothing industry. Since then, the shift of manufacturing from the coast to Henan has accelerated. Even Shanshan, a major Chinese clothing brand, has invested heavily in building a garment industrial park in Zhengzhou. Government support for large-scale garment industrial parks across Henan, including Zhengzhou, has further boosted business opportunities for companies across the supply chain. A notable shift is happening in the direction of fabric sourcing. High-quality fabrics for Zhengzhou pants used to come mainly from Guangdong and Zhejiang. Before 2005, these regions developed new fabrics first, which were then supplied to Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Fujian. Zhengzhou’s clothing companies had to rely on those suppliers. “Back then, we had to use rayon fabrics because that was all that was available,” said Zhao Sunli, chairman of Zhengzhou Ya Lida Garment Co., Ltd. But after 2005, as Zhengzhou’s trousers gained national recognition, fabric suppliers began adjusting their strategies. Now, new fabrics are often reserved for Zhengzhou first. By 2007, Zhengzhou had captured half of the country’s female pants production. This growth forced suppliers to adapt their production models. For example, Zhengzhou-based garment companies previously limited themselves to seasonal products due to material constraints. But last year, they started requesting fabric suppliers to provide materials for two seasons in advance. Song Ruiping, chief designer at Henan Wind Flag, shared similar experiences. Over the years, she worked on projects for various provinces and noticed that fabric suppliers now approach her directly, offering free samples to secure collaboration. This shift highlights how Zhengzhou’s apparel industry is gaining influence and reshaping the entire supply chain.
