Bamboo mats are a popular choice for summer bedding in many households, often seen as a safe and natural option. However, recent findings have raised concerns about their safety. In a recent investigation, the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station tested five bamboo mat products purchased from a small commodity market in Hangzhou. The results were alarming—each of the samples contained formaldehyde levels that exceeded national standards.
Many people are now questioning whether these mats might be harmful. “We usually pay more attention to the food we eat, but we tend to overlook the things we sleep on,†said Ms. Zhao, a local resident. “It seems like we need to be more careful now.â€
In response to public concern, reporters reached out to officials from the Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision. They explained that their role is limited to inspecting the production process, and since bamboo mats are not produced locally, they don’t regulate their quality once they enter the market. Similarly, officials from the Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce admitted that such products are currently a blind spot in inspections and pledged to increase monitoring in the future.
Chen Qiuhong, an assistant manager at a department store, confirmed that bamboo mats are among the top-selling items during the summer. “Our mats are all inspected before being sold, and we’ve never received any complaints about discomfort caused by formaldehyde,†she said. She advised consumers to consider both price and quality when purchasing.
According to Ms. Meng, a local citizen, many people now prefer buying mats from supermarkets or shopping malls due to their reliability and competitive pricing. “I haven’t heard of any cases of skin allergies from bamboo mats. I know building materials can contain formaldehyde, but I never associated it with mats,†she said.
Experts recommend washing and airing new mats before use. According to the Zhejiang Forest Products Quality Inspection Station, formaldehyde can come from raw materials like bamboo and wood, or from adhesives used in manufacturing. Some producers also use formaldehyde-based solutions to prevent mold.
While formaldehyde-related health issues from bamboo mats are rare in dermatology clinics, Dr. Wang Jinfeng from Shaoxing Second Hospital’s Department of Dermatology warned that high concentrations can cause irritation, respiratory problems, and allergic reactions. “If the formaldehyde level doesn’t exceed the standard, it’s generally safe,†he said. “But if symptoms occur, immediate action is needed.â€
Dr. Wang advised those experiencing allergic reactions to rinse thoroughly, avoid further exposure, and soak the mat in water before drying in the sun. For severe cases, medical attention is recommended.
